Just like the guests at my beach retreat Bulung Daya, I love exploring the island. Depending on my mood, I just bike around the rice fields, drive to a nearby temple or spend the day discovering another side of Bali. Here are my recommendations:
At Villa Bulung Daya
-
swimming in the 33 metres long pool
-
training in the villa gym
-
getting a massage (from a massage menu, starting at $16 an hour)
-
watching a movie in the movie room
-
taking a cooking class with my Balinese chef
-
working in my office space (high speed wifi, computer, printer)
Immediately around the villa (we are right between the beach and rice paddies)
-
Strolling on the black sand beach
-
Strolling among the rice paddies
-
Mountain biking on the country side roads (great views on the rice fields and on the volcanoes – I have 2 mountain bikes, can be used free of charge)
-
Fishing in the sea (Fishing rod available, one of my staff will show you the good spots)
Less than 30 minutes away
-
Driving to Belimbing: Beautiful views on rolling rice paddies, simple but good restaurant, loca Hindu temple with mischievous monkeys, very nice waterfall
See my blog post: https://www.realbali.com/romantic-bali-rice-fields- tour/ -
Driving to Balian: A simple, but authentic spot where surfers gather. A few bars, nice waves. Nothing fancy, but a pretty good idea of what Bali was like for surfers 20 years ago
1.5 hour to 2 hours away
-
Ubud: Cultural hot spot of Bali, nice temples, great yoga classes, good restaurants, Monkey Forest. Great place to learn about the Bali Hindu culture. A bit crowded in the middle of the day. Go there early morning and see the morning market, very colorful.
-
Seminyak: The Balinese riviera, with trendy bars and restaurants. See my choice of high end restaurants with great food, great architecture and locations that do not require you to ender the crazy traffic of the Kuta area : https://www.realbali.com/

Bretan Lake: Out of the main tourist crowds: Drive up the slopes of Mount Batukaru, see waterfalls, amazing views on 3 beautiful lakes from the ridge of a volcano (no need to walk), iconic Balinese temple on the lake). Longer ride, but worth it if you want to see a Bali that it the opposite of the Kuta / Seminyak area.
